Newes From the Dead, by Mary HooperYoung Adult, 2008
Newes From the Dead is based on the true story/pamphlet written in the mid-1600s of a young girl named Anne Green who was hanged for infanticide and fornication. She was revived on the dissection table and lived despite her hanging. Mary Hooper heard Anne's story on the radio and then did extensive research in order to write the book. In fact, when I read some of the details of what happened to Anne afterwards, I decided I liked her better in Hooper's book. It is excellently written - Hooper has a gift with this time period. (See At the Sign of the Sugared Plum.)
On the other hand, I didn't like the sex, and I thought there was too much of it, although it does explain how she got where she is. There's nothing graphic, it's more of a 'list' per se. I also thought the stuttering guy's story was unnecessary - a little too much of a side story. I did like John, though - the man that stays true and cares for Anne.
In the end I'd give it a B. Also, if anyone is scared of being buried alive, don't read it.
