Shrinking Violet, by Danielle Joseph
Young Adult, 2009
Teresa is an incredibly shy senior, who can barely handle 'hello' in the halls, much less a date for prom. But when she gets the chance to D.J. on her Dad's radio show, "Sweet T" comes out - which may be the opportunity to be herself for once.
I was surprisingly disappointed in this one. It's a fabulous idea, particularly the part where she's the prom date to whoever wins the song-writing competition for the station. I felt, however, that the characters were mostly off. Her mother, for example, has more hip than most girls at her school, but is incredibly immature. For a woman who got pregnant in high school and already has a failed marriage behind her, I expected her to be more...well, sober-minded. Her step-dad is cool, and I liked Pop-Tart. However, her friends all seem kind of lame and in the background. There if the plot needed them, but otherwise non-existent. I also wished she had a LOT more time on the radio station.
Graded a C+.
